Az ír kocsmazenét punkos, folkos elemekkel ötvöző, úgynevezett „pub’n’roll” műfaj egyik legismertebb és legkedveltebb honi képviselőjét, a Paddy and the Rats zenekart miskolci fiatalemberek alapították 2008-ban, a szórakozva szórakoztatás jegyében. A tökéletes átlényegüléshez ír hangzású művészneveket találtak ki maguknak, így lett az énekes-gitáros zenekarvezető Oravecz Kristófból Paddy O’Reilly, a basszusgitáros Takács Péterből Vince Murphy, a gitáros Maczonkai Gézából Joey MacOnkay, a valamivel később csatlakozó dobos Pongrácz Balázsból Seamus Connelly, a hegedűs-dudás-mandolinos Szabó Sándor Balázsból pedig Sam McKenzie, míg a tangóharmonikásuk a Sonny Sullivan nevet kapta. Koncertjeiken a viktoriánus kori Dublin jellegzetes figuráit, illetve a kalózvilágot idéző fellépőruhák, s más látványos színpadi showelemek segítenek teljessé tenni az ír kikötők és kocsmák hangulatának illúzióját.
Angol nyelvű, zömében saját szerzeményeket tartalmazó albumaik sorát a könnyed hangvételű Rats On The Board nyitotta 2010-ben kirobbanó sikert aratva, ahogyan második lemezük (Hymns For Bastards, 2011) is kedvező fogadtatásban részesült. A harmadik korong (Tales From The Docks, 2012) rögzítésekor már új harmonikás erősítette a csapatot, mégpedig a színművészként is népszerű Babicsek Bernát, azaz Bernie Bellamy személyében. Ebben a felállásban láthatták és hallhatták legtöbben a formációt, amely nemcsak a honi koncerthelyeken és fesztiválokon aratott babérokat, de a külföldi – többek között osztrák, német, szlovák, svéd, dán, olasz, francia és angol – közönséget is meghódította ellenállhatatlanul pörgős, lendületes muzsikájával.
A koncertekkel, lemezfelvételekkel, klipforgatásokkal teli évek során újabb sikerlemezek születtek (Lonely Hearts’ Boulevard, 2015, Riot City Outlaws, 2017), utóbbi a Motörhead-albumokat is keverő Grammy-díjas producer, Cameron Webb közreműködésével, a nemzetközi hírű osztrák Napalm Records gondozásában. Sajnos a 2021 év végén befejezett, 2022 júniusában bemutatott From Wasteland To Wonderland című album egy korszak lezárását is jelenti a Paddy and the Rats történetében Babicsek Bernát tragikus halála miatt. A szilveszterkor elhunyt harmonikástól az After The Rain című dallal búcsúzott a zenekar. Paddyéknek 2022 közepére sikerült ismét talpra állniuk szeretett társuk elvesztése után és Varga Zoltán billentyűssel ismét hattagúra bővült a formáció. Legutóbbi slágerük és videoklipjük 2023. júniusában jelent meg This is Our Life címmel.
